COMMENTMichael Mepham has a some words of warning for Los Angeles Times readersI welcome readers of the Los Angeles Times who have discovered sudoku in their daily newspaper. Yes, the little puzzle that spread its wings has returned to the country of its birth. It's back in the USA where it started looking a little more stylish following a stop over in Japan and with a few more wrinkles than when it left. Unsuspecting Californians may wonder what all the fuss is about. It's just an innocuous-looking 9 x 9 grid with some numbers scattered around it. No? Hah! That's what we in Britain thought only a few months ago before we began forgetting to pick up the kids from school, missing our train stops and clearing the breakfast table at 9pm. Perhaps I should warn you now? Yes, readers of the LA Times look away now... turn away from the sudoku grid... don't look... put that pencil down... Was I too late? Did you solve that first number, and was it good? How did it feel when you put that first correct number in its square and saw that another was ripe for the solving? You looked for another, didn't you, thinking to yourself "Why, this is a breeze." I am too late; you're hooked and the obsession has begun. It's the elation that you feel when you put that last number in its place and have solved your first sudoku that makes you want to do another... and another... Is that why you're here, seeking another fix? Well, I can help you. Just look around and you'll find something to scratch that itch. You've made a breakthrough and all you need to do is stand up, confront us all and say: "My name is Jo Soap and I am a sudokulist." June 20, 2005 ![]() |
